Rhtyhm

Whose idea was this word?

The way it’s spelled is so absurd.

It looks like Greek; it’s so bizarre.

At least we know it starts with R.

Aha! rhuthmos, “a measured flow”

The French or Latin changed it so

that rhythme was its newer name.

Then good ole English made its claim.

We just won’t use that extra E.

Vowels are so expensive, see?

Saying it is easy, too:

“Rith-um” like it has a U.

R-H-Y-T-H-U-M?

No, R-H-Y-T-H-M

So just the Y? No U or I?

You’re bound to make the spellers cry.

That’s not all, the H before

the Y will just confuse them more!

Oh, who cares, we’re English fools.

Who needs consistent spelling rules?
